Just about everyone loves to sing, and yet few people have figured out how to do it well. Of the people that do have appealing singing voices, many of them were blessed with good pipes from birth, but others had to learn how to sing from tireless practice. Whether a person is born with a good voice or not, the key to singing well is confidence. If a singer is assured of their abilities, it reflects strongly in not only in the way their voice sounds, but how their audience reacts to their singing. Many singers without traditionally good voices have gained fame by being confident with the voice they have.

Singers like Tom Waits and Bob Dylan may have voices that are grating and at times out of key, but they have become popular from being confident and exploiting their unique voices. A person that knows how to sing with inflection and has good range might have it easier, but people born without these things have flourished by using their less than polished voices to create a different, grittier sound. Depending on the subject and musical style of a song, vocalists can use their less than ideal voice to make it sync up perfectly with the music. Aspiring singers should note that even if they aren’t naturally great vocalists, there are ways to work around it.

However, for those that do aspire to have a beautiful voice, there is always the option of taking singing lessons. These generally consist of doing exercises that help people sing in key, hit new notes, and learn to project their voice better. While lessons can certainly help a person smooth out some of the rougher parts of their singing, at the end of the day a good voice still comes from the heart.

http://reviews.media-culture.org.au/

Brisbane’s Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts Company is a theatre troupe that was established to be a creative outlet for Australian aboriginal actors and artists. What makes this troupe special is that they perform a combination of modern stories and traditional aboriginal stories. Founded in 1993, the theatre company allows unique opportunities for actors of Australian aboriginal background to break into the theatre industry, while educating theatergoers about the aboriginal culture, legends, and history.

The Mack, one of the troupe’s recent offerings, is a play penned by Sam Watson. The story is centered around a family with aboriginal roots experiencing traumatic events. There are also components of aboriginal traditional beliefs in the work. In addition to learning about the typical struggles of modern-day aboriginal people, the audience is also exposed to aboriginal mythology and the way it is central to the culture and the way they experience life.

Whispers of this Wik Woman is another example of a performance by Kooemba Jdarra. This piece is adapted from Fiona Doyle’s book and details the journey of an Australian woman who is unsure about where her identity truly lies, in traditional aboriginal culture or the culture of European Australia.

The performance Skin Deep explores themes of black and white identity. The play, written by Dallas Winmar, juxtaposes the lives of one black woman and one white woman against each other over several vignettes that represent the progression of their lifespan. This play serves to present an empowered vision of indigenous Australians and bring the problems of racial inequality back into focus.

These plays allow for the open and honest expression of aboriginal needs and issues, and also allow Kooemba Jdarra to fulfill their mission to give aboriginal Australians an artistic voice. This troupe is a vital part of Australia’s theatre scene and adds a much-needed creative element that has the capability to serve Australian society for the greater good.

No visit to South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia is complete without a trip to see the Queensland Theatre Company. The professional acting group has been performing for the locals and tourists alike for four decades, with the 2011 productions being the 40th Anniversary Season.

The current production is “Grimm Tales,” disguised as stories from the Grimm Brothers, suggesting alternative outcomes for traditional versions of “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Snow White,” and “Hansel and Gretel.” A humorous view of realty within the fantasy is the final result of the adaptations by the famed acting group. A visit to see the Queensland Theatre Company will be a great family outing. Staged at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in South Brisbane, the production will run until December 11, 2010.

The 40th Anniversary Season schedule will be a great lineup of standard plays, along with that special Queensland Theatre Company twist. Beginning with “Sacre Bleu,” other stage shows will include “Pygmalion,” “Treasure Island,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and “No Man’s Land.” The closing play is a co-production with the Sydney Theatre Company written by Harold Pinter. It focuses on two gentlemen from different levels of life sharing stories over glasses of Scotch about the paths and lessons learned in each journey. It is an excellent choice for the closing play, highlighting wit, wisdom, and of course, comedy.

For local fans of the stage troupe, season tickets are also available at the Queensland Theatre Company website www.qldtheatreco.com.au.

Queensland Theatre Company is the state’s flagship professional theatre company, established in 1970 by an Act of Parliament.

The Queensland Performing Arts Centre is home to some of the most fascinating and cutting edge pieces of theater in the world today, with shows and performances spanning a broad range from traditional theatre to rock and roll and dance pieces.

The QPAC started as the Cremore Theatre in 1911, founded by John Nell McCallum, the father of legendary Australian actor John McCallum. Beginning as an open air theatre on the corner of Melbourne Street and Stanley Quay. By the late 1960s, it had become more of an unofficial cultural centre: a concert hall, a traditional theatre, a museum for the fine arts, and a gallery. In 1974, with the loss of Her Majesty’s Theatre, Queensland finally officiated the Cremore as the Cultural Centre of Queensland.

Since then, the stage has been home to every major act of the last several decades. The list of musical performers includes the likes of Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, The Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and Cyndi Lauper, while the list of major musicals appearing on the stage include Cats, Les Miserables, CHICAGO, The Phantom of the Opera and A Chorus Line, to list only a few.

Today, the QPAC plays host to legendary and up-and-coming acts and shows from around the world with a special focus on Australia’s finest performing artists, such as the Australian Ballet, the Brandenburg Orchestra and Opera Queensland, who have made QPAC their permanent home.

It’s fair to say that a trip to Queensland is not only incomplete, but inconsequential without a trip to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

Australia is a study of contrasts. It is a country and a continent. It is the world’s largest island as well as its smallest continent. Visitors will find a colorful mix of cultures. It is defined by its Aboriginal heritage yet boasts everything the modern age has to offer. The cities are decidedly metropolitan, while the outback is as wild as it has been since the beginning of time.

The Cities
Australia’s cities have plenty to offer. Sydney has a spectacular harbor and the sea-sculpted cliffs are great for walking and taking in the view. This natural beauty meshes with the city’s decidedly metropolitan offerings.

Renown for its art scene, Melbourne also tempts visitors with its famous shopping, cafes, bars and other secrets just waiting to be discovered. On the other hand, the city of Adelaide in South Australia is best known for the colonial stone architecture and many of Australia’s world-class wineries, which can be found just outside of the city.

Brisbane offers more of the Australia’s unique mix of old and new with classic homes on stilts sitting against a backdrop of city skyscrapers. Visitor’s looking to experience a bit of the outback will want to consider starting in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

The Natural Wonders
The nearly 50,000 kilometers of coastline is made up of more than 10,000 beaches, which are an integral part of the laid-back lifestyle that defines Australia. The Great Barrior Reef, located off the coast of Queensland is among the many experiences that define a visit to Australia.

Bird watchers will thrill to the opportunity to spot any of the more than 800 different species of birds, particularly the 400 that are unique to Australia. And, the kangaroo is unforgettable with an estimated 40 million of them hopping around. Add this to the multitude of unique flora and fauna and the spectacular landscape and it’s easy to see why a visit to Australia is on so many traveler’s lists of places to go.
