Queensland: Nurturing Performance Arts

The rich variety of performance arts produced by the residents of Queensland is largely made possible by the Arts Queensland government agency. They recognize and nurture the desire and need for arts in the community. Millions of dollars each year goes toward local performance art venues and programs, including the Queensland Orchestra, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Queensland Theatre Company.

Queensland Orchestra
Renowned for their astounding performances, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra entrances audiences with their concerts featuring modern and classical pieces. The Orchestra captivates attendees of all ages and musical tastes.

In addition to 47 weeks of performances on their own stage, the orchestra extends their talent to broadcasts, national and state operas and ballets, and art festivals.

Eighty-eight talented musicians compose Queensland’s full orchestra. They perform to over 100,000 patrons each year.

Queensland Performing Arts Centre
The goal of the Queensland Performance Arts Centre (QPAC) is to promote creativity and innovative learning among the community and its patrons. The performances presented by the Centre strive to reach these goals by entertaining, inspiring and moving audiences.

Many of the state’s performance arts companies call QPAC home, including the Queensland Ballet, Opera Queensland, The Queensland Orchestra and the Queensland Theatre Company.

Nearly 750,000 attendees experience the visions of the Queensland Performance Arts Centre. As of 2010, over 14 million people have attended shows inside the Centre.

Queensland Theatre Company
By an Act of Parliament, the Queensland Theatre Company launched in 1970. The area’s first professional theatre company produces ten plays annually. These performances host a variety of plays and talented performers. The plays range from locally-written pieces to classics from across the globe.

The Queensland Theatre Company encourages local artists to nurture their creative sides. The Company presents yearly programs and awards to outstanding local writers and artists. These programs and awards are especially designed to instill the importance of creativity and art into the lives of young citizens.

The not-for-profit Queensland Theatre Company receives significant funding through the government of Queensland, specifically the Major Performing Arts Board of the Australia Council and Arts Queensland. A Board of Directors presides over the Company.
